Day one: Queenstown Attractions and activities include: Skippers Canyon: enjoy a mix of history and high adventure including bungy jumping, rafting, flying fox and jet boating. It is recommended that visitors take a guided excursion in Skippers Canyon as the road is not suitable for standard vehicles Jet boating: experience the Shotover, Kawarau or Dart River.
Gondola ride: rise 450 metres/1475 feet above Queenstown to Bob's Peak to enjoy views of Lake Wakatipu and the surrounding mountains, from every vantage point. Enjoy a luge ride (a luge is a short, raised toboggan for one person seated) down a slope from the top of the gondola ride.
TSS Earnslaw: cruise across Lake Wakatipu aboard this 90-year-old steamboat.
Arts and wine: follow a wine trail or the Wakatipu Arts Trail Kiwi and Birdlife Park.
Maori culture: take in a Maori concert and traditional meal.
Trout and salmon fishing: test the waters all year round.

Day two: Queenstown to Wanaka From Queenstown drive to Wanaka through the Kawerau Gorge on State Highway 6. This area has dramatic scenery and relics of the old goldmining days are plentiful.
Detour to Arrowtown, an old goldmining town that provides an interesting journey back in time with its memorabilia of the era as well as boutiques and cafes. Another suggestion is to visit Arrowtown Museum to gain an interesting insight into the settlement and social history of the region.
When returning to State Highway 6 from Arrowtown, stop and take in the picturesque scenery around Lake Hayes.
If the season is right and you are in the Cromwell area during the summer months, you can stop at one of many roadside fruit stalls around Cromwell, known for its pipfruit orchards. From Cromwell drive along the shores of Lake Dunstan to Lake Wanaka and the Wanaka township. The crystal-clear waters of New Zealand's fourth largest lake reflect the snow-capped peaks of Mt Aspiring National Park, whose dominant feature is Mt Aspiring itself, towering above a magnificent glacier-sculpted wilderness.

Flightseeing: enjoy one of many scenic flights in the South Island's alpine region: Milford Sound, Mt Cook and Mt Aspiring. Remote area landings are available in Mt Aspiring National Park for trampers, climbers and hunters.

Day three: Wanaka to Franz Joseph
From Wanaka township, travel beside the twin lakes of Wanaka and Hawea before entering the scenic wilderness of Haast Pass. Stop along the way to take advantage of the many short nature walks and great picnic spots.
Visit the Haast Information Centre for excellent displays on the local environment and for information on walks available within the area.
On reaching Haast visitors are entering the West Coast region of New Zealand. The West Coast of the South Island is a sparsely populated region with dramatic scenery. It is an area of mountain peaks, impressive glaciers, tranquil lakes and raging rivers, lush rainforest and a magnificent coastline. Stretching 600 km/373 miles in length, the West Coast has either wholly or partially located within its boundaries five of New Zealand's 13 national parks. Furthermore, the southern West Coast area has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its uniqueness and as a 'special place' in the world.
