A guide to exploring the best of Christchurch's shopping, from an experienced shoppers local knowledge. Time is so important when hitting the shops; so with that in mind this guide to exploring the best of Christchurch's shops should make your experience more fruitful and enjoyable.

Usual Shopping hours are:
Monday to Friday 9.00am - 5.30pm (Check for late nights)
Saturdays and Sunday 10.00am - 4.00pm (Most areas)

Upon your arrival in Christchurch, make your way to the collection point for your rental vehicle, and prepare to shop!!


Day one: Inner City areas
Cashel Mall: Cashel Mall is an open-air mall, situated along Cashel Street from Oxford Terrace to High Street and incorporating several smaller malls off to each side. Here you will find many trendy clothing shops, some of the chain stores, shoes, homestores and many more.
Not to be missed is Ballantynes, located on the corner of Cashel Mall and Colombo Street - A specialist department store with a tradition of service. (They also sell tax free if travelling overseas). There is an escalator to the 2nd floor and a walkway from this level across Colombo Street into the Food Hall of the Bus Exchange. From here you can take the Food Hall escalator back down to Colombo Street. If looking for fabrics - don't miss Fabric Vision on Cashel Street just over High Street.

High Street: High Street from Lichfield Street to Tuam Street has many boutiques and New Designer shops - also a great Hat Shop. Located on the corner of High street and Tuam Street is McKenzie and Willis, this store is great for furniture and home accessories. From here don't miss a visit to Panache - Barbara Lee designs, 232 Tuam Street, which is next door to McKenzie and Willis. Barbara is one of New Zealand's top designers. Fantastic for clothes from the corporate look right through to the most delicious evening wear, Barbara likes women to be tough but feminine and just a little bit "wicked". (Her shop closes early on a Saturday and is not open Sundays).

If time allows head to the North side of Cathedral Square. Situated between Armagh and Gloucester Streets is New Regent Street, a cobbled street with an exciting mix of boutique shops.


Day two: Victoria Street and Merivale Mall
Victoria Street from Lichfield Street to Bealey Avenue is becoming a shoppers delight for fashion, antiques, speciality shops and cafes. Not to be missed is Lynn Woods Studio at No. 149. Allow plenty of time as Lynn offers an extensive collection of fashionable, classic, funky and stylish labels (some unique in New Zealand to her store) and the team there are passionate about individual styling and co-coordinating wardrobes. Next door at No.149a is Via Sollertia - their team of jewellers and designers can make your dreams a reality. From the most exquisite diamonds (they import their own) to the top of the range costume jewellery. You deserve it!!! From Victoria Street head along Papanui Road to Merivale Mall - 189 Papanui Road (5 minutes in a vehicle). Merivale Mall is known for it's high quality fashion, jewellery and gifts.

If you didn't get enough of Kimberleys Store in Victoria Street then they have another store here in Merivale Mall. Allow plenty of time to browse the two levels of Quinns Fashions located in the corner of the mall beside the lift. Merivale area also has an excellent range of cafes, bars and restaurants.


Day three: Westfield Mall Riccarton and Factory Outlet Shopping
Located within 10 minutes driving of the city centre, Westfield Riccarton features leading international and local brands conveniently located under one roof with a fabulous food court featuring a range of international cuisine. You will find Westfield Riccarton is a shopping centre that caters for every taste. From Riccarton you can head to Dressmart, the factory outlet Shopping Centre. Dressmart is located at 409 Main South Road, Hornby, which is a 10 minutes drive from Riccarton Mall. Hours - Open 7 days a week 10am - 5.00pm. At Dressmart you will enjoy genuine savings on popular brand names in fashion, sportswear, accessories, music and books, including both national and international fashion labels.


Day four: A casual day with a little Rest and Relaxation
The Art Centre, Worchester Boulevard (Hagley Park end), weekends are best. This is the cultural hub of Christchurch. More than 40 art galleries, craft studios, specialty shops, cafes, restaurants and bars occupy these historic buildings. A great weekend visit as the market bustles with the sights and sounds of artists, craftspeople, musicians, buskers and food vendors. Roam at your leisure. Don't miss Fudge Cottage!! From the Art Centre you can catch the Tram for a tour of the inner city or stroll back along the Boulevard to the Christchurch Art Gallery.

Punting on the Avon - From the landing stage on Worchester Boulevard, beside the bridge, you can enjoy the delights of punting on the tranquil Avon River and take in the sights of Central Christchurch at a relaxing pace. This operates daily, weather permitting from 9am - dusk.
If you feel like a little pampering, try the Champs-Elysees Beauty Day Spa located at 28 Cathedral Square in the Old Government Building (OGB) / Heritage Hotel on the ground floor. This magnificent Italian Renaissance building has been lovingly restored and is the perfect place to take time out and be pampered, within their 25m heated lap pool, relaxing Spa Pool, Sauna room or take a private Hydrotherapy spa with Ocean Salts or Aromatherapy.
