Auckland to Auckland. Day one: Auckland - The City of Sails Upon arrival at Auckland Airport, pick up your rental vehicle. This day is free for you to relax and explore the city area. Places to visit: Viaduct Basin. This vibrant waterfront precinct was developed to provide a focus for America's Cup Yacht Race. Great also for nighttime entertainment with it's many cafes and bars. Sky City. Towering at a height of 328 metersl, this is one of New Zealand's most popular entertainment destinations. With 2 casinos, ten restaurants and bars, and from the Observation level the best view of Auckland City and surrounding areas. Rainbow's End - Situated at Manukau (approx ½ hours drive from the city on the Southern Motorway), is New Zealand's Premier Theme Park with 23 Acres of rides and attractions. Kelly Tarlton's Antarctic Encounter and Underwater World - Explore the wilds of Antarctica. Living in this frozen habitat are colonies of King and Gentoo Penguins, watch them play in real ice and snow. Then travel deep beneath the ocean to see giant stingray, moray eels and come face to face with the awesome predators of the deep - SHARKS - Only centimeters away. Day two: Auckland to Rotorua Today drive south to Rotorua, a journey of approx 3.5 hours. Rotorua is one of the Pacific's most active thermal areas and a place of vibrant Maori culture and great natural beauty. View magnificent examples of mud pools, geyers and steaming fumaroles. Some of the many geothermal areas are Wai-o-tapu, Waimangu or Hell's Gate. Surrounding Rotorua are 14 beautiful lakes offering fishing, water sports or maybe try your hand at whitewater rafting, lunging or tandem skydiving. Tonight you can visit a marae, enjoy a concert and hangi (traditional Maori meal). Day three: Rotorua Visit Te Whakarewarewa Thermal Reserve and Pohutu Geyser, the Paradise Valley Springs, Bird and Wildlife Park, the Agrodome Sheep Show and Skyline Skyrides Gondola. Day four: Rotorua to Waitomo Today drive to Waitomo, home of the famous Waitomo Caves (approx 3 hours drive). On your way, stop at the Otorohanga Kiwi House and Native Bird Park. This is the best view you can get of the genuine (feathered) kiwi and other rare native birds. Enjoy the peaceful rural location of Waitomo. The Caves are the area's best known and world famous natural attraction with their vast caverns full of eerie stalactite and stalagmite formations. The huge network of limestone caves are home to millions of glowworms. Take a tour of your choice to admire the glowworms by boat, walks or blackwater rafting. Day five: Waitomo to Auckland Today you will head north back to Auckland in to return your rental vehicle and meet your return flight. The drive will take approximately 3 hours, through some of the beautiful lush green farming pastures that New Zealand is famous for.
