Some of New Zealand's most beautiful scenery and much of our early history is to be found in the north of North Island. The Bay of Islands is one of New Zealand's premier holiday destinations both for tourists and locals alike.
Day one: Auckland - The City of Sails
Upon arrival at Auckland Airport, pick up your rental vehicle. This day is free for you to relax and explore the city area.
Places to visit:
Viaduct Basin. This vibrant waterfront precinct was developed to provide a focus for America's Cup Yacht Race. Great also for nighttime entertainment with it's many cafes and bars.
Sky City. Towering at a height of 328 metersl, this is one of New Zealand's most popular entertainment destinations. With 2 casinos, ten restaurants and bars, and from the Observation level the best view of Auckland City and surrounding areas.
Shopping: Queen Street, Vulcan Lane, High Street, O'Connell Street and Chancery
Day two: Auckland - Paihia
Today drive north via the Kauri Coast to Paihia. Along the way stop and visit Tane Mahuta, the Kauri Museum at Matakohe, and the Waipoua Kauri Forest. On your arrival at Paihia relax and enjoy the beautiful golden sand beaches. Paihia is a popular and attractive holiday town. An early missionary centre, (population aprox 1840) it was the site of New Zealand's first church, made of reeds. It's stone replacement, the Church of St. Paul, is still used today.
Cruises around the Bays are also very popular.
Day three: Cape Reinga
Take a scenic drive to the famous Cape Reinga. Highlights include 90 Mile Beach, the Lighthouse at Cape Reinga and spectacular views where the two oceans meet.
Day four: Paihia
Explore Paihia. This morning take a cruise to the famous 'Hole in the Rock' at Cape Brett and enjoy some of the 144 islands that make up the Bay of Islands. The afternoon is free for you to explore and enjoy this magnificent area.
Day five: Paihia - Auckland
Today you are to head north back to Auckland in time to meet your return flight. Your drive will take approximately 4 hours. Drop off your rental vehicle as per your Rental Agreement.
