A thermal wonderland, you can stand on active volcanoes, peer into massive craters, see boiling mud or erupting geysers. Enjoy unspoiled native forests that cloak the land.
The region has 14 scenic lakes brimming with trout. Lake Rotorua is the largest lake in the district with windsurfing, kayaking and trout fishing being favoured pastimes on the lake.
At Whakarewarewa you will see the country's largest geyser, Pohutu (playing to about 31m), the Prince of Wales' Feathers geyser, boiling mud pools and silica terraces. Whakarewarewa village has carving and weaving schools where you can see traditional craftspeople at work.
In Rotorua, horse trekking, orienteering, and some of New Zealand's best mountain-bike trails are easily accessed. Lake Rotoiti joins with Lake Rotorua and is very popular for boating.
