New Plymouth is the only city in the Taranaki region and is the commercial hub. Mt Taranaki/Egmont's cone dominates the skyline and can be seen from many places in the North Island. The majestic peak provides skiing in winter and hiking in summer. It has also doubled as Mount Fuji in the movie blockbuster The Last Samurai.
Eastern Taranaki has plentiful camping, surfing, windsurfing, fishing, diving and swimming (in patrolled areas). The Wanganui region (south of Taranaki), has the city of Wanganui as its commercial centre. Of the many rivers in the region, the most well-known one is the Whanganui River, which wends its way 260km through the countryside out to the Tasman Sea. Activities to be found on and along the river include canoeing, jet boating, and walks.
Keen hikers will be in their element in the rugged forest country of the Whanganui National Park which has two 3-4 day hiking tracks.
