Snowy mountains, sparkling rivers leading into the mighty lake, thermal outlets where hot water steams, and trout - these are among the memorable features of the Lake Taupo District.
Explore the lake and rivers, have fun with activities such as jet boating, lake cruises, white-water rafting, parasailing, windsurfing, canoeing, water skiing, or kayaking. Other activities for the more adventurous include bungy jumping, gliding, skydiving, helicopter and fixed-wing flights, horse riding, mountain biking, and 4WD bike riding.
Thermal areas are located nearby at Wairakei and Tokaanu. The central north island is a volcanic plateau and includes the Tongariro National Park, which has three active volcanoes; Ruapehu, Tongariro and Ngauruhoe. The Tongariro National Park has a variety of walking tracks and Mt Ruapehu has the popular ski fields of Whakapapa, Turoa and Tukino. In nearby forests you can hunt for feral deer, pigs, goats, rabbits and possums making it popular with hunters.
