The Waikato region is well known for its greenery and agricultural produce. Volcanic activity has enriched the soil, producing lush grass for raising thoroughbred horses, dairy cattle as well as exotic timber. At spots where the underground rocks are still hot, mineral springs occur and are tapped for bathing and drinking.

Hamilton, the commercial centre of the region, has become a farming, industrial, financial and educational centre. Waitomo is known for its glow-worm caves; visitors can take guided walks or enjoy boat trips through the caves. Several of Waitomo's limestone caves are used for adventure activities such as black-water rafting as well as abseiling. Near the picturesque village of Waitomo there is also horse trekking, a pioneer farm show, and 4WD motor guided tours, or get the adrenalin going with drive-yourself jet boats.

To the north is Otorohanga, famous for its kiwi house and kiwiana; northwest you'll find the beautiful Kawhia harbour.
